The Caja Story

Steel, bamboo, and the spirit of La Union — how three containers became a place people keep coming back to.

The Name

What's in a Caja?

Caja is Spanish for box — the container, the vessel, the thing that holds what matters. Elyu is how the locals shorten La Union: a place where the wave breaks, the road runs long, and people stop rushing.

Put them together and you get exactly what Caja Elyu is: a box of a room in La Union. Simple, honest, and more than enough.

The idea was to take something industrial — steel shipping containers, built to cross oceans — and give them a reason to stay. On Urbiztondo Road, one of the Philippines' most beloved beach strips, three containers were planted in the sand and reimagined as rooms worth returning to.

Philosophy

How We Think About Staying

Honest Architecture

Containers don't pretend to be something they're not. We lean into the steel ribs, the corrugated walls, the raw geometry — and add warmth in the details. What you see is what you get.

Built for Barkada

La Union isn't a solo sport. Each container fits up to six — comfortable for couples, perfect for groups. The shared outdoor spaces are designed to blend three separate units into one connected experience.

Location as Amenity

Urbiztondo Road is the amenity. The best surf spots, cafés, restaurants, and sunset views are all within walking distance. We put you where you need to be — the rest is La Union doing what it does best.

Our Values

What We Stand For

01

Simplicity Over Excess

Small rooms done well beat sprawling rooms done poorly. Everything in a Caja Elyu unit is there because it earns its place.

02

The Community Strip

Urbiztondo is a neighborhood, not just a destination. We're proud to be part of it — not above it.

03

Adaptive Reuse

Shipping containers have a life before they become rooms. We honor that history by repurposing rather than discarding.

04

Warmth in the Texture

Bamboo accents, shade sails, and natural materials soften the industrial bones. Comfort doesn't come from size — it comes from care.

05

Repeat Guests, Not Just Tourists

The highest compliment we receive is when someone books again. We build for the third visit, not just the first.

Our Journey

How Caja Elyu Grew

The Beginning

Three Containers Arrive

The first three units land on Urbiztondo Road — positioned to face the breeze, steps from the beach. La Union's surf scene was growing fast; accommodation that matched its spirit was needed.

Early Community

Word Gets Around

Barkada groups start filling all three units on weekends. The shared outdoor deck becomes the social hub — surfers, musicians, creatives, and first-time La Union visitors mixing easily.

Digital Growth

4,400+ Instagram Followers

@cajaelyu reaches over 4,400 followers. The feed documents real stays, real guests, real La Union moments — and guests start tagging their stays before they even check out.
